- Octavo, printed light bluish-gray wraps. The spine is darkened & slightly chipped and there is a vertical crease to the covers. The rear joint is split at the top. 52 pages, illustrated with a full-page frontispiece depicting the ship "The 'General Werder'" and a folding map showing the route of the expedition. Good.

A fund-raising prospectus designed to raise monies for the expedition. Includes testimonial letters about the plans of the expedition given by high ranking naval officers, followed by a list of the managers and officers of the expedition and of the ship. The proposal then includes a "Schedule of the Proposed Route, Showing Principal Localities to be Visited" with "The Plan and Purpose of the Expedition", a "Sketch of the Proposed Route", a description of "The Vessel and Equipment", the "Fees" to be paid by the students and tourists, a description of "The Course of Instruction", "Discipline and Guardianship", an outline of the expedition's "Recognition by Home and Foreign Governments", and the expectations about the "Scientific Results of the Expedition". The prospectus closes with the printing of several testimonials, including one by Henry Ward Beecher.
