Good - Octavo, olive green cloth titled in gilt with decorations in gilt on spine & with vignette of a conductor on a podium stamped in gilt on spine & in blind within decorative frames in blind on both covers. The covers are rubbed & bumped with the extremities faded; the spine is faded with the head & tail chipped with small pieces out. vii & 346 pp. & a 14-page illustrated publisher's catalogue, including a 4-page extract from "The Watchman". Scattered foxing & light staining; 1 page soiled. Good. First edition. Moravian-born opera impresario Maretzek was dubbed the "Napoleon" of opera by his friends and followers. Arriving in New York in 1848 as the conductor and manager of the Italian Opera Co., he produced four seasons of Italian opera in his first three years in the city. He presented Adelina Patti for the first time in opera in 1859. Price:
