A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION INSCRIBED WITH A DRAWING BY THE ARTIST JOHN GROTH TO FELLOW ARTIST RICHARD PIONK - Oblong quarto, 9 inches high by 12-1/2 inches wide. Natural creamy white buckram titled in maroon on the front cover & the spine, in a color pictorial dust wrapper. The dust jacket is slightly soiled with minor creasing to the edges. 152 pages, profusely illustrated in color and black & white throughout, with depictions of the artist's superb paintings and drawings of sports throughout the world, including horse racing, the tour de France, bullfighting, Sumo wrestling, crossbow, falconry, etc. Near fine in a very good dust wrapper.

First edition. Inscribed and signed in full on the front endpaper by the artist John Groth to fellow artist and past president of the Salmagundi Club Richard Pionk, with an original finished pen & ink drawing of a Jockey riding a thoroughbred horse, initialed by the artist.

The original prospectus with attached order form for the book is laid in at the front together with the price list for the exhibition of his paintings at the Gallery-on-Six at Abercrombie & Fitch.

Best known for his depictions of combat, John Groth (d.1988) illustrated many books. His work, which included paintings depicting 6 wars, is represented in collections all over the world, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The artist Richard Pionk (1936-2007), was President of the Salmagundi Club, educator and art collector. Inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame, his work is part of the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art.
