Starrett, Vincent. BANNERS IN THE DAWN: Sixty-Four Sonnets. INSCRIBED by Vincent Starrett.

- Octavo, brown paper covered boards backed with brown cloth in an acetate dust wrapper. The boards are rubbed & faded along the spine with the paper rubbed away at the corners. The head of the spine is rubbed & chipped. 73 pages plus colophon. There is a small pink stain to the front edge of 1 page, else the contents are very good. First edition, limited to 250 copies. Inscribed by Starrett to his good friend Fridolf Johnson on the front endpaper with ink corrections to his poem "Salome" [Johnson was a Salome collector]: "For Fridolf Johnson-- / about a dozen of these sonnets. The rest I don't care for much; but it is fifteen years too late to do anything about it. / Vincent Starrett / 29 Oct: 1938". Johnson has penciled his name beside the inscription and his bookplate is tipped onto the front pastedown.

- Octavo, light blue cloth titled in tan with a decorative panel in gilt & tan on the front cover. The spine & extremities are darkened & there is staining to the top edge of the front cover. 56 & [1] pages with a decorative title-page panel, decorative initials and running titles printed in red. There is an owner's bookplate on the front pastedown with his ink signature on the front endpaper. Very good. First edition, printed by D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston. From the library of Sherlockian Vincent Starrett with his book label tipped onto the front pastedown and his signature on the half-title.

- Small octavo [7 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide], unbound. 3 sheets of cream stock, 7 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide, are folded to form 10 sides, the first & last sides being blank. Title & 4 pages of text plus colophon. The outer blanks are very slightly darkened around the edges & there is some very minor soiling to the rear blank, else near fine. First separate edition, limited to 150 copies printed on Renker Text by Fridolf Johnson at the Mermaid Press. This memorial essay was reprinted from the Chicago Tribune of April 14, 1957. Rare.
