INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY VIRGIL THOMSON - Quarto, softcover bound in printed golden yellow wraps. Title & 82 pages. Near fine. Inscribed by the composer on the title page: "for Martin Riskin / all good wishes / Virgil Thomson". This suite was first performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Eugene Ormandy on November 26, 1948.

- Octavo, black cloth titled in gilt on the spine in a printed red & gold dust wrapper. The covers are very slightly rubbed and the dust jacket is slightly rubbed with minor chips along the top edge and a tiny piece out from the bottom ot the jacket's spine. 214 pages. Very good. First edition. "Music Right and Left covers the musical scene from 1947 through the spring of 1950. Its content range from Bach to Landowska to Edith Piaf to contemporary music in the U.S.S.R. A special collection of essays is devoted to the memory of Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Kurt Weill, and Bela Bartok." -- Excerpted from the dw blurb.

- 8vo, navy blue cloth (bumped & lightly rubbed) titled in gilt with vignettes in gilt on spine & front cover, in dw (chipped, rubbed & soiled; dw spine faded; price-clipped). x, 318 & xviii pp. plus colophon (scattered internal soiling with tiny stains to a few pages). Good. First edition. Thomson became music critic of the New York Herald Tribune in 1940. These essays are drawn from columns written for the paper from 1944 to 1947. The title piece is a revised version of a speech he delivered in May 1947 before the Harvard Symposium on Music Criticism.

- 8vo red cloth (lightly bumped; spine somewhat faded) titled in gilt with vignette of lyre in gilt on spine & with circular vignette of a woman with a lyre stamped in gilt on front cover. xiv, 301, xv & [1] pp. (top corners of 6 leaves miscut & creased; staining to inner edges of endpapers). Good. First edition. Thomson writes in his Introduction: "The following selected essays and reviews, with one exception, appeared in the New York Herald Tribune between October 9, 1940 and July 23, 1944. They are not offered here as a complete picture of New York's musical life during that time but rather as a panoramic (here and there even stereoscopic) view of musical America as that has been visible to an American musician resident in New York."
