A necklace of coins adorns her neck. A disheveled man with a mustache attired in a white shirt with frills is seated on a bench or wagon next to her. Two young boys are seated on the floor in front of the couple, looking up toward their mother. There is a piece torn from the bottom right corner of the photograph and a small circular tear near the woman's head at top left. There are remnants of black mat paper on the verso.

Major James C. Sawders [d. 1960] served in the U.S. Army in World War I and World War II as a chemical engineer, retiring in 1946. After his retirement he began traveling extensively to the Caribbean and to Central and South America, often as a freelance correspondent and photographer. This brochure promotes a series of lectures on his travels for the 1932-33 season sponsored by the James B. Pond Bureau. The lectures are on the West Indies, Mexico, the Rio Grande to Panama, and with the Marines in Nicaragua [Sawder accompanied a Marine expeditionary force during the American occupation of Nicaragua]. Included are a bio and portraits of Sawder as well as reproductions of photos he took during his travels.

Major James C. Sawders [d. 1960] served in the U.S. Army in World War I and World War II as a chemical engineer, retiring in 1946.
