Though not credited, many of the powerful photographs which grace this issue are by significant photographers of the period.

This is the first appearance of Ernest Hemingway's essay "A Program for U.S. Realism". In this 1938 issue, Hemingway writes, with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek: "There will be war in Europe, if not this year then next. This lends peculiar timeliness to a classic cathechism on the nature of war. It also furnishes a simple pattern on which we can be realists of more than mere Chamberlain expediency. The obvious thing for us to do is sell all we can to both sides, but on a strict C.O.D. basis. And that, obviously, would be the quickest way to end it, in a Europe long on hate but short of gold.".
