In his Preface, the author notes that when he began this work in late 1912, there was no one volume "dedicated to the purpose of giving a connected account of the rise and progress of the Russian school of musicians." His history begins with the "Pre-Nationalists"--Volkoff, Berezovsky, Glinka, Dargomijsky--and continues through the early work of Stravinsky.
