Belchite/South Bronx, sponsored by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Gallery, was a project initiated and supervised by Francesc Torres, who directed its video component in Spain and the South Bronx. The project and exhibition consisted of a six-channel twelve monitor video installation, a single-channel videotape and this book. It drew parallels between Belchite, a small town in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, which was completely destroyed by the opposing forces in the Spanish Civil War and left as a "half-hearted war memorial [which] quickly became a garbage dump", and the South Bronx--devastated in the aftermath of World War II by "white flight", the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway and the numerous buildings burned down by both landlords and tenants.
Text in Spanish and English. First Edition.
