"The writers of this book, who are married, are respectively a woman who has all her life been clairvoyant without having to resort to the practice of mediumship, and a psychologist interested in psychical research. The book is therefore derived from personal experience and study in the fields of psychology, of spiritualism and of 'psychism' in general...." - [Quoted from the dust jacket blurb].
With her husband, Phoebe Payne Bendit was a long time member of the Theosophical Society. According to Phoebe Bendit, she was a clairvoyant from birth and described her experience thus in one of her books: "I do not remember a time when the visible world did not play into and through another world. I had no idea where one ended and the other began: they were both to me ordinary and natural, and they belonged together .... The world of the living and of ordinary affairs wove itself across the pattern of the so-called dead and their environment...." She met the medium Mrs. Neil at the age of 19 when she was becoming concerned that she might be mentally ill. The medium helped her and, following Mrs. Neil's death, she began working as a secretary at the Stead Bureau. According to her husband, Laurence J. Bendit, she studied at London's British College of Psychic Science. She discovered Annie Besant's book "The Ancient Wisdom" while in her 20s and subsequently joined the Theosophical Society. Phoebe Payne Bendit was said to be a stickler for the scientific method even if experiments might shed doubt upon her gift. She met her husband, the psychiatrist Laurence Bendit, in 1930 and published her first book "Man's Latent Powers" in 1938. The couple were married in 1939 and she and her husband were popular lecturers and authored several books, including: "Our Psychic Sense", "This World and That", "Man Incarnate, A Study of the Vital Etheric Field" and "The Transforming Mind". Dust jacket present. First Edition.
