THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF A CLASSIC FINNISH CHILDREN'S BOOK - Quarto, 11-3/4 inches high by 11 inches wide. Color pictorial boards backed with a blue cloth spine. The covers are rubbed with wear to the edges and corners and to the head & tail of the spine. 30 & [2] pages, illustrated with a half-title vignette, 8 full-page and 5 half-page black & white illustrations, plus 8 full-page color plates by Rudolf Koivu. A previous owner's name with her address is penned on the front pastedown with "Helsinki, Finland" penned on the front endpaper. There is minor foxing or light staining to the endpapers & pastedowns and a tiny chip to the bottom edge of one leaf. Very good.

The scarce first edition of a classic Finnish children's book about the child Jesus.

The children's book author and translator Signe Salome Kantele (1890-1970) was a Finnish nurse and missionary. She worked on a mission in China with her husband Vaino Kantele from 1915-1923. She was the author of "A Holiday on the Hillside" and "Jesus Child".

The Finnish illustrator and painter Rudolf Koivu (1890-1946) is best known for illustrating children's books of fairy tales, including those of Zacharias Topelius, Anni Swan and Hans Christian Anderson. Established in 1949 the Rudolf Koivu Prize, awarded biennially to Finish children's book illustrators, is named in his honor. First Edition.
