Book Condition Fine Publisher New York: January 31, 1939. 1939. Seller ID 5234 - One-and-a-half pages. Over 280 words typed on 2 sheets of 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide stationery with The John Day Company letterhead at the top of the first page. Richard Walsh writes to John Hyde Preston, author of "The Liberal", regarding a story which Preston has submitted to him, "I really should like to talk to you about the story. Both Mrs. Wash and I read it and it moved us a great deal. It is beautifully written, as all your things are, and the theme is magnificent!" Yet, he has some difficulties with the story, "it seems to have a major defect, in that the motivation is not wholly clear....I think the reader rather expects you to show plainly what the man's psychological difficulty is, and to my mind you don't do that...." Though Walsh goes on to praise the story, he nonetheless declines to publish it as written. Signed "Dick". Folded, else fine with the original mailing envelope.
