Richard Walsh writes to John Hyde Preston, author of "The Liberal", regarding a story which Preston has submitted to him, "I really should like to talk to you about the story. Both Mrs. Wash and I read it and it moved us a great deal. It is beautifully written, as all your things are, and the theme is magnificent!" Yet, he has some difficulties with the story, "it seems to have a major defect, in that the motivation is not wholly clear....I think the reader rather expects you to show plainly what the man's psychological difficulty is, and to my mind you don't do that...." Though Walsh goes on to praise the story, he nonetheless declines to publish it as written. Signed "Dick". Folded, else fine with the original mailing envelope.
